A repressed matriarch and, unfortunately, extraordinary circumstances – a disturbing earthquake, a crushing debt, a dying ex-husband, an angry co-worker and her son’s girlfriend – push her to the limit. “Hamon” is a standard Japanese word that literally means “ripples” and metaphorically means the influence each of us has on others. This is highlighted several times in this film with scenes where the protagonists – wife, husband, son, etc. – stand in a shallow lake, and the ripples from one character expand in a regular circle to reach the others. It’s a pretty interesting visualization of interpersonal relationships, but nothing that couldn’t be applied to any film involving humans. Or, indeed, any living organism. The film’s arc follows the flight and suffering of a Japanese housewife who must survive the sudden disappearance of her husband, the death of her father. an only child to college, and then a career as far as you can travel without leaving Japan (well, except Okinawa), and then said bum shows up again. a man Among other events. There’s a lot of humor, a lot of shoes, some strange scenes with the deaf fiancé that the son brings home without warning. I think it was worth watching even before the last scene, which was surprising, moving, refreshing, actually quite wonderful. Oh!
